The act of having someone or something influence our life so we can grow and become the best version of ourself is important…very important.

If you know you need to make a change but you’re not exactly sure what change needs to happen first or who or what could help you, start by doing the following:

  • Make a list of the things that matter to you right now or the things you feel are holding you back in your leadership journey.
  • Ask yourself: What area am I really most struggling with? What skill do I feel that I am lacking? What wall do I keep coming up against? What feedback am I continually hearing from others? Where are my greatest frustrations coming from? What triggers me? What out of this list I’ve made shimmers to the top as the most important for me right now?
  • Answer for yourself: I wish I knew more about ____________? Perhaps it’s something to do with time management or leading a team or incorporating a new spiritual discipline into your life or advocating for yourself in the work place. Get clear about what you want to know more about.
  • Brainstorm who you know that knows about the areas you’re wanting to grow in. Perhaps your answers can be found in a book or a podcast or a TEDTalk or perhaps you need to reach out to a particular person.

Once you’ve done the above, make a plan of action – and be specific! Make a list of things you will do, followed by filling in the blanks to this next statement. I will do ________ by _________. Wishful thinking doesn’t get us far, we need to take concrete steps towards our goal(s).

And, if you’re going to reach out to a person to ask them for some of their time, be specific in what you’re hoping they can help you achieve.
