I have been thinking a lot lately about the things we surround ourself with. More specifically, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about who we allow to influence us and whether or not they are helping us to up our average.
I’m using the term average to mean someone who is helping you become the best that you can be. Who’s not letting you settle! Who’s pressing into God and encouraging you to do the same. Who in your life is living a life worth modeling after? Hebrews says this:
“Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith.” (Hebrews 13:7, NLT)
This past Monday I sat around a table with some extraordinary women leaders from our city, leaders who blessed me in ways beyond measure and who left me feeling like I was surrounded by people who would “up my average” significantly.
Scripture also tells us this:
“Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.” (Psalm 1:1–3, NLT)
So let me challenge you with this: Where do you stand and who do you stand with? (Just to be clear, I’m not talking here about serving others or standing against injustice, I’m talking about who we, as Christ-followers, allow to influence us towards righteous living and stewardship of gifts.) Where do you invest your energy? Who do you allow to influence you? Where are you spending your time? Do you need to do things differently?
It’s important as leaders that we ask the Holy Spirit to search our hearts, to show us the path we’re on, and, if there are some things we need to do differently, let’s be about making the neccessary changes.
Who ups your average?
